About Caldwell
Caldwell Presbyterian Church is a diverse and welcoming community that seeks to embody Christ’s love
through radical hospitality, social justice, discipleship, and service. Rooted in the belief that faith should
be lived out in tangible ways, our vision for ministry is to create a space where all people-regardless of
age, ability, background, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status-are
embraced, valued, and empowered as disciples of Christ.
The Associate Pastor’s Role
Complimenting the Senior Pastor, the Associate will join a team that includes part-time staff in the roles
of Business & Operations Manager, Minister of Music, Minister of Youth & Online Outreach, Facility
Manager, Community Engagement Specialist, and Event Manager. A successful candidate will
demonstrate a commitment to support and complement the Senior Pastor in the short term, and
simultaneously help build the future of Caldwell, continuing beyond that pastor’s anticipated retirement
in approximately 3 years. The Associate will oversee the evolution of the newly added Community
Engagement Specialist role.
In Congregational Care, they will make intentional contributions to the happiness and well-being of
others through relationship-driven support & feedback. They will engage individuals based on their
unique needs and characteristics, recognizing that societal differences are highly valued and everyone
has innate value in the kingdom of God. In worship, the AP will bring dynamic, thoughtful, compassionate
preaching that integrates scripture and real life.
They will help Caldwell grow as it attracts and engages people of color, young families with or without
children, young adults, people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, older adults with or
without grown children, and people of all abilities from varied economic, social, and faith backgrounds.
Most of all, the AP will bring their own lived experiences to the reading, teaching, and living of the Word to
inspire the congregation to continue the path of discipleship following the life and teachings of Jesus
Christ.
Required Skills, Gifts, Training
To successfully serve this congregation and community, an ideal associate pastor will have high levels of
spiritual maturity, value experiential learning and growth, seek developmental feedback, and possess a
keen awareness of their inner resources & limits, their strengths & weaknesses, and the emotional
impact of ministry. They will be skilled in interpersonal relationships, teaching, preaching, and public
speaking and will demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
Training and experience in anti-racism, embracing LGBTQIA+ in faith communities, congregational care,
and organizational dynamics are essential to this role. Equally important is a commitment to care for
oneself, maintain boundaries, and cultivate a balanced life while fulfilling the call to ministry in a fast-
paced, demanding community of seekers. Candidates must be eligible to be ordained in the Presbyterian
Church USA to serve in this Called and Installed role.
Tasks and Assignments
The Associate Pastor (AP) will collaborate with Senior Pastor (SP), staff, and lay leaders to actively engage
and empower our diverse congregation to live into our mission and Call. AP will apply strong leadership,
relational, and decision-making skills in these areas:
• Worship (35%): Collaborate with SP, staff, and worship committee to plan and participate in all
worship services, including preaching 1-2 times per month.
• Congregational Care (30%): Lead congregation care efforts, coordinating committee members
and staff to comfort the sick and grieving, build proactive relationships, foster active engagement,
and nurture “in reach.” Support weddings, baptisms, and funerals (with SP); serve as liaison to
prayer ministries; and offer spiritual guidance in all ways. Manage the Community Engagement
Specialist staff member.
• Organizational Leadership (25%): Be actively engaged in Session, staff, and committee work;
serve as staff liaison to select committees; and ensure communication between staff and lay
leadership. Use various communication channels, including digital platforms, to engage and
inform members and the community.
• Mission and Justice (10%): Be committed to social justice as an integral part of Christian life.
Work with staff and lay leadership to support ongoing mission and justice work. Must be
comfortable working among and alongside historically disenfranchised populations, including the
unhoused, as Caldwell’s Easter’s Home provides supportive housing for 21 previously chronically
homeless individuals on our campus.
