Mission: To advance Jesus’ life-transforming movement of disciples making disciples

Southern Gables Church (SGC) has a rich heritage of faithfully proclaiming God’s Word in Colorado and around the globe, through our missionary family, for more than 50 years.

SGC is part of the Evangelical Free Churches of America (ECFA). The ECFA is an association and fellowship of autonomous and interdependent churches united around the same statement of faith (https://www.efca.org/about/what-we-believe).

  • Global Witness Acts 1:8
  • Uncommon Community Acts 2:42

MINISTRY AT SGC

Sunday Services

Two identical services are held on Sundays at 9 am and 10:40 am.

Children’s Ministry

SGC has an active and vibrant Children’s ministry. We have a loving and caring staff that seeks to point the children of SGC to Jesus. The staff works hard to provide each child with a meaningful experience in a safe and enjoyable environment. Mid-week programming is also available to children on Wednesday nights.

Students

SGC has an active middle school and high school ministry. Students meet on both Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. They enjoy small groups together, social activity, and weekly worship through music and the Word.

Young Adults

SGC has been increasing its focus and emphasis on ministry to young adults (college through early 30s). The Young Adults meet together on Sunday mornings but also enjoy many other opportunities for meaningful interactions together.

Adult Communities

Various Adult Communities (ACs) are offered during the 9:00 and 10:40 am hours. The ACs are an opportunity for adults to gather together in smaller groups for prayer, fellowship, and interaction around God’s Word.

Life Groups

A variety of opportunities are provided during each week for SGC families/individuals to get together in homes throughout the city. These groups are usually 8‒12 people in size and are discussion-based, allowing members to participate as they study the Bible together. Groups generally meet for 8‒12 weeks at a time.

Missions

SGC has a significant commitment to doing our part in helping to fulfill the Great Commission. We actively support 17 missionary families around the globe, and about 20% of our annual expenditures goes toward mission endeavors.

Prayer

In recent years, SGC has experienced a renewed and enthusiastic commitment to prayer. The church regularly gathers in small and large groups to seek the Lord in prayer. Each month, we host One Thing, which is a monthly Prayer and Worship night. A free dinner is provided first, and then the church spends 90 minutes together in worship and prayer. The passion for prayer at SGC is steadily growing

POSITION SUMMARY

The Worship Director will serve as the point person to lead the worship and music ministry and to execute the overall vision and direction of worship at SGC.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

REPORTS TO:  Executive Pastor

RELATES TO:  Other Pastors/Directors and church family

KEY RELATIONSHIP:  Sr. Pastor, for worship service planning/vision

FULL/PART-TIME:  Full-time, exempt position. Open to part-time.

Note:  If full-time, the Worship Director will be expected to oversee one other aspect of ministry depending on gifts and abilities.

VISION FOR WORSHIP AT SGC

Music at Southern Gables is presented in a contemporary worship style as we desire for truth to be made accessible to the people of our present culture. We seek to respect and learn from our tradition and to incorporate aspects of our heritage into our worship of God, while carefully avoiding traditionalism and meaningless habits. To this end, we will strive to use the best that the historical and contemporary church has to offer. Therefore, we use modern worship songs supplemented by older hymns, which are often updated musically. Other more traditional liturgical elements such as creeds and responsive readings are occasionally incorporated. These elements, when used, are often recast in a contemporary style. Our desire  is that all of these elements—song, prayer, Scripture, creeds, sermon, Lord’s Supper—coalesce to retell the story of the Gospel from creation to new creation.

While the primary core of our presentation will be a worship band—acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, vocalists—we also desire to use the accompaniment of other instruments as well when useful in creating a rich and contemporary sound: violin, cello, brass, piano, organ, woodwind, voice, and more. The Lord can be worshipped with a variety of instruments, but we believe that the congregational voice is the primary instrument of worship; therefore, congregational participation is essential.

We envision a variety of presentations within a contemporary framework to help keep our worship fresh and to use the gifted persons that God has given us. One week might use a praise band whereas the next week would add a violin and cello to the mix. And yet another week might be a simpler acoustic presentation.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Care for the Musicians:  Our musicians and other creative people should be built into a cohesive, unified community that plays well and loves each other. This includes times of fellowship and member care. The Pastor of Worship needs to be one who loves people.

Increase Participation:  Southern Gables Church is blessed with a tremendous amount of talent, but it is unutilized or underutilized. We would like to see the entire ministry built up so as to increase passion and involvement.

Developing Leaders:  The Worship Director should identify other worship leaders who need to be developed for use in our church and the larger Body of Christ.

Create Environments Conducive to Worship:  The Worship Director must have the ability to creatively design services that are often coordinated with the preaching theme, which inspire the congregation to more fully worship God. This includes optimizing our lighting and creative staging to maximize impact. And the Worship Director should also disciple people to create environments of worship in their homes and others spheres of influence.

Implement the Vision:  The Worship Director must be wholly committed to our vision of disciples making disciples, beginning in his/her walk with the Lord, spilling over into his family and neighborhood, and finally, extending to the musicians who are part of his team. He is a disciple-maker first and a musician/artist second.

Master Director and Long-Range Service Planner:  The Worship Director will work closely with the Sr. Pastor to make sure our services are adequately planned.

Scheduling:  The Worship Director will be responsible for scheduling all the musicians. Our worship team members participate on a rotating basis to encourage broad participation and to avoid individual musician burnout.

Oversee A/V Technology:  The Worship Director will be ultimately responsible for making sure all our sound and visual equipment is properly functioning.

Sundays & Midweek Practices:  The Worship Director should plan on leading services for 46 Sundays per year and for scheduling leadership in his absence. Moreover, a regular weekly worship team practice should be held to ensure that Sunday is a quality worship experience. In addition, there will be additional planning and rehearsals for other musical services as required, e.g., Christmas concert, Good Friday, Easter, and hymn sings.

Develop Other Ministries of Worship:  The Worship Director, in conjunction with other ministry leaders, should proactively identify and develop the next-generation worship leaders to be used in praise of God. Those with creative gifts of prayer, visual arts, photography, dance, media, acting, and staging should be encouraged and released to use their gifts in ways not necessarily confined to Sunday morning.

Timely Communication:  Communication should be proactive and punctual with the ministry staff and volunteers.

Completing Weekly Details in Planning Center:  All weekly details of flow and order of service should be completed in Planning Center.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal Worship Director:

Education

A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required for this position. A Bible School or Seminary degree is preferred. Desire for ongoing theological education is preferred.

The Worship Director must have the ability to be a servant leader and be willing to model for the congregation and musicians what a fully devoted disciple of Jesus Christ looks like.

Personality

The Worship Director will be an individual who is visionary and creative in the ways and means of leading people to worship God.
