Job Description

Calvary Church – Pueblo, Colorado

https://calvarypueblo.com/hire

Please watch the three videos we have posted about the job on our hire page.

Our Commitment to You: We want you to succeed in leading God’s people to His throne room each service through music. Our leadership team and staff are well prepared to support you. We want Calvary to be a place for you to grow and experience the joys and challenges of leading worship teams, working in a church, and balancing all the responsibilities that come with being on staff.

We will value your opinions and meet challenges together, always in love and with the goal of making you a better worship leader.

Spiritually, we will pray with and for you. Physically, we will provide for you. Musically, we will offer mentorships and coaching. You will have the tools you need to excel in your roles. You will gain experience in working with a unified and dedicated staff, leadership skills that will thrive in any church environment, and develop patience and love for those you lead in worship.

The Ideal Candidate:  Above all you should be a person of maturing Christian character that puts others ahead of yourself. Someone that naturally and skillfully brings people along in worship to participate, we don’t need a “rockstar”. We need someone that is patient in introducing new songs and gracious in singing the songs we know.

You should have a stage presence that draws people into worship.  A willingness to grow and change your style. Improving and adapting for the greater good of the people is hard, but it is necessary in a ministry environment.

We value chemistry.  Being able to get along with us as a staff is vital. With a staff of 6, we have 6 very unique and fun personalities. We do things in and out of office hours and want you to be part of that. We all chip in and help each other. We are friends as well as employees. The value of being able to get along and enjoy each other’s company, is super important.

About Us: Calvary Church is an established church, over 140 years strong, in the heart of Pueblo, Colorado. Pueblo has over 300 days of sunshine, outdoor activities throughout the entire year, amazing views of the Rocky Mountains, rivers, and a thriving food and art culture. We all agree that Colorado is a great state to live in and Pueblo a great city to raise a family. There are so many afternoon and day trips around us, always something to do or somewhere to explore.

Calvary has renewed focus and missional clarity after our Lead Pastor, Tim Miessler, came to Calvary just over three years ago. The staff is focused, energetic and passionate about reaching this city for Jesus. The people are welcoming and driven to be better. We are an average size church for America, but we live and dream big because we know our God is able to do above and beyond what we think is possible. He can change an entire city and He uses people just like you to do it!

It might sound strange, but getting people to attend church is not our goal at Calvary. We want people to experience God regardless if they are a first time guest or have been part of Calvary for 40 years. “I would like to invite you to church” is not as impactful as “I want you to come with me to experience a relationship with Jesus, worship Him and hear from Him.”

Reaching Pueblo and Living the Life is the summary of the Great Commission for us.

If this is starting to sound like a challenge and the right place to grow your calling and skill as a Worship Pastor then consider applying.

What are some future plans at Calvary?  We have lots of detailed plans for some physical renovations to our facility and hope to make some of those investments in the next 6 months. But more exciting is a brand new service we would like to introduce for the community. You would be a key part of designing the new service. No details on it yet, just a desire to start one. Could be as radical as having it on a Thursday night.

Scope of the Position: The title “Worship & Creative Arts Pastor” can be a mouth full. You will be responsible for implementing the vision and mission of Calvary Church in respect to worship, arts, technology and marketing (outreach). If you can come up with a better title to incorporate all that, we will use it. You will do more than just sit in an office practicing songs all week. We expect you to be challenged every day to love and minister as part of the staff. The focus is music but ministry takes us to roles we were not expecting.

You will wear many hats during the week from answering the phone, signing for daily Amazon packages, finding out why a computer is not working, tag along on pastoral visits, set up the stage, run to the store for supplies, troubleshoot an email problem, advance the online marketing/presence of the church, move chairs and of course play music and run rehearsals. This list should not overwhelm you but demonstrate an honest week’s activity that all promote the mission of Calvary.

You should be humble and comfortable working with a staff that does everything we can to make the church a force of change in Pueblo.

You should be:

  • Talented and have a strong musical ability to lead, sing and play worship songs in front of people. Ability to play the guitar or keys is preferred. We are not looking for a singer-songwriter, we need you to point us to the throne room of God each week through music played well.
  • Good at utilizing songs we find meaningful and gracious when introducing new songs.
  • Organized and efficient with your planning and time management.
  • Great at talking through ideas and problems.
  • High energy, self-starter and able to follow through.
  • Good understanding of software like Google Suites, Canva, Planning Center, Pro Presenter, and Logic would be ideal. Mac programs are also handy to know.
  • Pretty tech-savvy, you would be the go-to person for all things tech. (We are all pretty good at this, but we need a point person for it, that would be you.)
  • A drive to promote the experience we want people to have at Calvary through various media platforms and a knowledge of how they work. (We have a part-time person that works in this area too, so you have help).
  • Humble and caring.
  • Desire to learn how to mentor others in worship and tech ministries.

How would I spend my time?

  • Worship Ministries (50%)
  • Technology (10%)
  • Marketing/Outreach Media (30%)
  • Administration (10%)

What level of education and experience do I need? No one starts off with 5 or 10 years of paid experience. If you have no paid experience or formal worship education, that is ok. We want to give you the opportunity to build experience and we will give you the tools to make that happen. It would be nice to have a music degree or something bible related, but it is not necessary. Your talent and character will drive the interview process, not your degrees or paid experience. If you can play worship songs well, feel comfortable leading in front of people and most importantly feel God is calling you to this ministry, then apply.

Reports to: Lead Pastor

Direct Reports: Worship Teams (Paid and Volunteer) and Technical and AV volunteers

This is a great opportunity to gain experience and get training, all in a very supportive environment. Act on your calling and join us at Calvary as we love a city that needs Jesus.
