Position Summary:

Westwood Presbyterian Church (WPC) is seeking an outgoing and creative Director of Student Ministries.  This person will help continue the growth and education of the middle and high school students in our congregation.  The Director will help foster and develop a strong and joyful faith in Jesus Christ.

About WPC:

For seven decades, WPC has served the west side of Los Angeles with energy and compassion.  Located just south of Westwood Village and the UCLA campus, WPC is a progressive and inclusive community that welcomes all.  That makes us a diverse family and we like it that way.  We are committed to church’s “main thing” which is to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.  We don’t always get it right, but we keep at it, on behalf of our beautiful, broken world.  Mission is part of our DNA and we are always searching for new ways to make hands on connections both locally and abroad.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create a vision for WPC Student Ministries with the primary goal of fostering faith in our students;
  • Establish deep and caring relationships with students, their families and all volunteers;
  • Develop year-round programs such as bible studies, youth groups, off-site retreats, special events and service projects;
  • Attend and help lead all scheduled youth activities, special events, and trips;
  • Help maintain a social media presence for Student Ministries (e.g., Facebook and Instagram);
  • Develop and manage the Student Ministries budget and oversee administrative needs.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree; M.Div. or working towards an M.Div. preferred;
  • At least two years proven and relevant Youth Ministry leadership experience;
  • Devotion to and passion for teaching teenagers about Christian faith;
  • Knowledge of current youth culture and trends; savvy on the use of most social media platforms;
  • Ability to act as a community liaison with other churches and outside organizations that may serve the interests of our youth;
  • Ability to be a great listener and understand the dynamics of today’s youth; focus on making certain all feel welcome, included, and valued;
  • An understanding of the many means of building faith (bible study, game-playing, mission projects, and more);
  • The type of personality that will draw teenagers in and get them excited to explore their faith and invite friends to their youth group activities;
  • Resilience and ability to creatively adapt to a generation that must actively choose/be convinced to explore their faith;
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal; strong organizational and time management skills.

This is an exciting time at WPC.  This opportunity provides a chance to join a dedicated team and help grow our Student Ministry program.  You will definitely be able to come in and make your mark.  Ideally this is a part-time salaried role that will include Sundays, weeknight, and occasional weekend activities.  If you should seek a full-time role, that might be an option if you can also commit to growing our college age ministry as well.  We look forward to getting to know you through this process.  Unfortunately relocation cannot be provided so we prefer local candidates or those with plans to move to Los Angeles already in the works.
