This is an exciting opportunity to head our communications department as we bring these services back in house. Help connect people to Jesus and make Jesus known by promoting our weekly worship, multi-age ministries, service opportunities and events through the bulletin, website, e-newsletter, social media and video announcements. You will oversee all aspects of internal and external communications and marketing to enlighten and promote the ministry efforts of the church—both within and outside the church family.This is a full-time director level position with benefits.

 

Essential Functions and Basic Duties 

 

Organizational Planning and Direction

  • Ensure a consistent voice in the messaging and branding of the church to existing and future congregants
  • Cultivate fresh ways to reach target audiences through a variety of print and electronic media
  • Meet responsibilities as outlined by the church board for mission/purpose, financial oversight of budget, and servant recruitment/development standards

Operational Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, author and edit information included in print and electronic publications — including weekly bulletins, weekly announcement videos/scripts, e-newsletters, ministry brochures and event handouts
  • Coordinate the design, develop and format all graphics associated with print and electronic publications
  • Coordinate the printing (either internally or through an external vendor) of bulletins, discipleship curriculum materials, ministry brochures, event handouts and other print material
  • Proactively manage and coordinate social media content—including capture of analytics to make content, frequency, posting and boosting recommendations
  • Coordinate with ministry leaders to maintain and ensure the content of the church web site is current
  • Capture website analytics to make content and navigation recommendations
  • Oversee relationships with outside vendors—including participating in decisions regarding the selection of vendors
  • Directs promotion and public relations efforts—including development of press releases, electronic and social media advertising
  • Attends and participates in staff, lead team and production meetings
  • Prepares and proposes annual communications and promotions budget; monitors budget; provides ongoing financial activity as necessary; prepares purchase orders and requests for all expenses (including external vendor costs); completes accurate documentation.

Staff Development

  • Recruits and maintains a staff of interns and lay servants
  • Work with pastoral staff and other congregational leaders in cultivating a culture of effective communication and consistent messaging

  

Required Qualifications

 

  • Must love God with all your heart, soul and mind with a passion for equipping people for ministry in the church, local community and the world
  • Commitment to the mission and theology of the Church
  • Education/Certification: Bachelor’s Degree in a communications discipline or some other related degree(s) or equivalent experience
  • Experience: minimum 4 years demonstrated high-level communications skills

Skills/Abilities:

  • Comfortable working in a Christian environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships across the entire demographic of the congregation
  • Self-starter, team player, systems-thinker and planner
  • Understanding of and direct experience in the communications industry
  • Understanding of and direct experience in project management
  • Understanding of and direct experience with social media
  • Ability to integrate and relate the communications ministry to the rest of the church’s ministries
  • Proven ability and commitment to work collaboratively with other leaders, staff and community
  • Possess contemporary computer skillsets—including InDesign and Adobe Creative Suite graphic development software, Word Press website management, Constant Contact email marketing and similar operating systems

St. Stephen UMC, 6800 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, NC 28270
1200 member United Methodist congregation in Charlotte, NC seeks part-time (up to 25 hours per week) Director of Communications (DOC). Responsibilities include 3 print publications, various on-line communications (weekly), website management and governance, occasional publicity and marketing projects, oversight of other on-site media and maintenance of church calendar.
Prefer background and experience in communications including strong oral and written communication skills. Graphic and technical design skills are a plus. DOC to work in close collaboration with Director of Social Media, other Church Staff and ministry team chairs in marketing/promotion, missions, evangelism, stewardship, discipleship and worship.
